Princess owns and operates five Alaska wilderness lodges: Denali, Mt. McKinley, Kenai, Copper River, and Fairbanks. Cruisetours use the Direct-to-the-Wilderness rail service straight from the ship in Whittier to Denali.
Land nights available
3 to 8 land nights; On Your Own, Connoisseur (escorted), and Off the Beaten Path options
Inclusions and packages
Base fare covers cruise, meals in main venues, and select entertainment. Princess Plus and Princess Premier packages add Wi-Fi, beverages, crew appreciation, and specialty dining.

Best for
First-time Alaska cruisers, families, and anyone who wants the most seamless ship-to-Denali cruisetour

If Denali is a must, Princess makes the logistics nearly invisible. Their Mt. McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge has the best mountain view of any lodge in the state on a clear day.

Holland America Line

Seventy-five years in Alaska and the most Glacier Bay permits of any line.

Alaska ships
Koningsdam, Nieuw Amsterdam, Eurodam, Noordam, Westerdam, Zaandam
Homeports
Seattle, Vancouver, Whittier (Anchorage)
Glacier access
Glacier Bay National Park on nearly every itinerary, plus Hubbard Glacier and Tracy Arm. The only line offering Glacier Bay on 7-night Seattle roundtrips.
7-night roundtrip pricing
$949–$1,900 interior/oceanview; $1,700–$3,300 balcony; $3,200–$6,800 suite

Land add-ons
The McKinley Chalet Resort at the Denali park entrance, plus Yukon and Fairbanks routings that no other line offers. Land Plus Cruise Journeys include the McKinley Explorer glass-domed rail cars and the Tundra Wilderness Tour inside the park.
Land nights available
3 to 10 land nights; the only line with Yukon Territory (Dawson City, Whitehorse) cruisetours
Inclusions and packages
Base fare covers cruise and main dining. Have It All package bundles shore excursion credit, beverages, specialty dining, and Wi-Fi. Glacier Bay park rangers and Huna Totem cultural interpreters board the ship.
Dining highlights
Pinnacle Grill, Tamarind, Canaletto, Rudi's Sel de Mer, Alaska-focused Global Fresh Fish program
Best for
Travelers who prioritize glacier viewing, quieter ships, enrichment, and a longer land journey including the Yukon

Holland America is the line I grew up seeing in Southeast Alaska ports. Their Glacier Bay access is unmatched, and the Yukon cruisetour is the single most underrated itinerary in Alaska.

Celebrity Cruises

Modern, design-forward ships with a premium onboard experience.

Alaska ships
Celebrity Edge, Celebrity Summit, Celebrity Solstice
Homeports
Seattle, Vancouver, Seward (Anchorage)
Glacier access
Hubbard Glacier and Endicott Arm / Dawes Glacier. Celebrity does not currently hold Glacier Bay permits.
7-night roundtrip pricing
$1,050–$2,200 interior/oceanview; $1,900–$3,800 balcony (Infinite Veranda on Edge); $3,800–$8,500 suite (The Retreat)
7-night Gulf one-way pricing
$1,300–$2,400 interior/oceanview; $2,200–$4,200 balcony; $4,200–$9,200 suite
Cruisetour pricing
$2,900–$6,800 per person for 10–13 nights (cruise plus land), balcony category
Land add-ons
Celebrity partners with third-party lodges and the Alaska Railroad rather than owning its own. Cruisetours pair Seward sailings with Talkeetna, Denali, and Anchorage, with a Wilderness Express dome-car rail segment.
Land nights available
3 to 6 land nights; smaller escorted groups than the big two, fewer routing options
Inclusions and packages
Base fare covers cruise and main dining. All Included fares bundle Wi-Fi and classic beverages. The Retreat suites include butler service, a private restaurant, and sundeck.
Dining highlights
Four complimentary main restaurants on Edge, Eden, Le Petit Chef, Fine Cut Steakhouse, Rooftop Garden Grill
Best for
Couples and adults who want a stylish, contemporary ship and elevated food and wine, with Alaska as the backdrop

Celebrity Edge is the most beautiful ship sailing Alaska, full stop. Just understand the trade-off: you will see Hubbard, not Glacier Bay, and the land program is thinner than Princess or Holland America.

Alaska cruise comparison questions

Which Alaska cruise line is best for seeing Glacier Bay?

Holland America Line and Princess Cruises both hold National Park Service permits for Glacier Bay. Holland America includes it on nearly every Alaska itinerary, including 7-night Seattle roundtrips. Celebrity does not currently sail Glacier Bay and visits Hubbard Glacier or Dawes Glacier instead.

Which line has the best Denali land add-on?

Princess and Holland America both own lodges near Denali and operate their own rail service, so their cruisetours are the most seamless. Princess has five wilderness lodges across the state; Holland America is the only line with Yukon Territory routings. Celebrity uses partner lodges and offers fewer land nights.

How much does an Alaska cruise cost?

A 7-night Alaska cruise typically runs $900 to $2,200 per person for an interior or oceanview stateroom and $1,600 to $4,200 for a balcony, depending on line, ship, and sailing date. Cruisetours that add 3 to 7 land nights generally range from $2,400 to $6,800 per person in a balcony category. May and September sailings are the best value.

Should I choose a roundtrip Inside Passage or a one-way Gulf of Alaska cruise?

Roundtrip Seattle or Vancouver sailings are simpler and less expensive on airfare. One-way Gulf of Alaska sailings between Vancouver and Whittier or Seward see more glaciers and are the only way to connect directly to a Denali cruisetour. Dawn recommends the one-way route for anyone adding land.
