Why Certification Alone Is Not Enough
AmaWaterways certification requires completing a course and passing exams. That is the baseline. Any travel advisor who has spent a few hours on an online training platform can call themselves AmaWaterways certified.
What certification does not require is firsthand sailing experience. It does not require knowing what it feels like to dock next to another ship and walk through it to reach the port. It does not require understanding what low water levels look like in practice, what the crew does when the river is too high to navigate, or which AmaWaterways ships offer sit-down dining versus buffet service.
