This is one of the first conversations I have with travelers considering a European Christmas Market river cruise.

Rhine Christmas Market River Cruises
The Rhine can be an excellent choice for travelers drawn to storybook European scenery, historic cities, castles and traditional Christmas markets.
Depending on the itinerary, travelers may experience destinations in countries such as Germany, France, Switzerland and the Netherlands.
I often look at the Rhine for travelers who picture their Christmas Market trip as a combination of medieval architecture, German Christmas traditions, historic old towns, castles and Rhine scenery, Alsatian influences, Christmas shopping, and food and wine experiences.
For a first European Christmas Market trip, the Rhine can be very appealing.
Danube Christmas Market River Cruises
The Danube creates a different atmosphere.
Here, the Christmas Market experience can be combined with some of Central Europe's great imperial cities.
Depending on the itinerary, travelers may visit destinations such as Budapest, Vienna, Bratislava, Linz, Salzburg-area destinations and other towns along the Danube.
I often consider the Danube for travelers particularly interested in Vienna, imperial European history, classical music, grand architecture, Central European cuisine, historic Christmas traditions, Budapest, and multiple countries in one itinerary.
Neither river is automatically "better." The better river is the one that matches the experience you want.
What I Look for When Planning an AmaWaterways Christmas Market Cruise
When I help a traveler evaluate an AmaWaterways Christmas Market sailing, I don't start with the question, "Which cruise is cheapest?" I start with the traveler.
1. The River
Do you picture Germany, castles and storybook villages? Or Vienna, Budapest and imperial Central Europe? Choosing the right river can matter more than choosing between two similar cabins.
2. The Actual Itinerary
Two cruises marketed as "Christmas Market cruises" can provide very different experiences. I look at the cities visited, time available in each destination, excursions, embarkation and disembarkation cities, and opportunities for independent exploration.
3. The Ship
River cruise ships are not interchangeable. I've personally inspected and sailed river cruise ships, and differences in cabin design, public spaces, dining, layout and atmosphere can influence the experience. That is why I consider the ship and itinerary together.
4. Your Cabin
December river cruising is different from cruising Europe in July. You may spend more time inside your ship, and daylight hours are shorter. I consider cabin size, location, balcony configuration, deck and the amount of time a traveler expects to spend in the cabin before recommending that they spend more for a particular category.
5. Walking and Mobility
Christmas Market trips can involve significant walking. Historic European centers frequently have cobblestones, uneven surfaces and pedestrian-only areas. I want travelers to understand that before they arrive.
6. Pre- and Post-Cruise Travel
Flying all the way to Europe and boarding a river cruise immediately isn't always the choice I recommend. Additional nights can provide time to adjust to the time difference, reduce the stress associated with flight disruptions and allow travelers to experience the embarkation or disembarkation city more deeply.
7. The Traveler
A couple celebrating an anniversary may need something completely different from a multigenerational family. An active traveler may prioritize excursions. A foodie may care more about dining and regional cuisine. Someone visiting Europe for the first time may want iconic destinations.
There is no single "best" river cruise for everyone.
What I've Learned From Firsthand River Cruise Ship Inspections
Cruise-line websites are useful for specifications. They can tell you cabin square footage, restaurants, deck plans and amenities.
But there are things I notice only after stepping aboard a ship. How does the cabin actually feel? How easily can two people move around it? How does the public space flow? Where would I want my clients' cabin located? Who will love this ship? And equally important: who might be happier on another ship or cruise line?
I have personally inspected more than 25 river cruise ships and have firsthand sailing experience aboard European river cruises. My experience includes ships from multiple river cruise companies, allowing me to evaluate AmaWaterways in the context of the broader river cruise market rather than in isolation.
That independence matters to me. My job isn't to make every traveler fit one cruise line. My job is to help determine which cruise line, ship, itinerary and cabin best fit the traveler.
Is AmaWaterways Good for First-Time River Cruisers?
For many travelers, yes.
AmaWaterways can be particularly appealing to travelers who want an active but comfortable European river cruise experience with multiple ways to experience destinations.
But "first river cruise" alone isn't enough information for me to recommend a particular sailing. I would also want to know: What kind of hotels and cruises do you normally enjoy? How important is food? Do you prefer active excursions or slower-paced sightseeing? Do you like independent exploration? What cabin experience matters to you? Are you celebrating something? Are you traveling as a couple, solo, with friends or with family? What do you expect to spend? What do you most want to experience in Europe?
Those answers can change my recommendation.
Are AmaWaterways Christmas Market Cruises Good for Couples?
They can be an excellent choice for couples.
Christmas Market cruising naturally combines sightseeing with evenings aboard the ship, regional food and wine, historic destinations and opportunities to explore together.
It can work particularly well for couples who want a European vacation but don't want to coordinate multiple hotels, trains and transfers.
For anniversary or milestone travel, I also consider the cabin category, pre- or post-cruise accommodations and special experiences that may make the overall trip more memorable.
Are Christmas Market River Cruises Good for Multigenerational Families?
They can be, but this is an area where choosing the right river cruise product becomes especially important. I cover this in depth in my guide to the best multigenerational river cruises.
Multigenerational families may have different activity levels, interests and mobility requirements. Grandparents may want one excursion while adult children want another. Some travelers may want to shop while others want history, food or active exploration.
I evaluate the cruise from the perspective of the entire traveling group, not simply the person making the reservation.
What Should You Pack for an AmaWaterways Christmas Market Cruise?
December in Europe requires thoughtful packing. I recommend planning for layers rather than relying on one extremely heavy item.
Your packing list should generally include warm waterproof or water-resistant outerwear, comfortable walking shoes with good traction, warm socks, gloves, a scarf, a hat, layers that can be added or removed, a compact umbrella, a small crossbody bag or secure day bag, a portable phone charger, and medication and essential items in your carry-on.
Comfortable footwear is especially important. Christmas Market days can involve hours of walking and standing, often on cobblestones. This is not the trip for brand-new shoes.
Should You Arrive in Europe Before Your River Cruise?
In many situations, I recommend arriving at least one day before embarkation, and sometimes longer.
International flights can be delayed. Luggage can be delayed. Winter weather can complicate air travel. And jet lag is real.
I'd rather have a client enjoying coffee in Europe the day before embarkation than watching the clock during a delayed connection wondering whether the ship will leave without them.
A pre-cruise stay can also become part of the vacation rather than simply an insurance policy against travel disruption.
When Should You Book an AmaWaterways Christmas Market River Cruise?
Christmas Market sailings take place during a relatively short seasonal window, so travelers who have specific requirements should generally begin planning early.
This is particularly important if you need a specific ship, a particular itinerary, certain travel dates, a preferred cabin category, connecting or adjacent cabins, multigenerational accommodations, premium air arrangements, or specific pre- or post-cruise hotels.
I don't recommend choosing a cruise solely because it happens to be the last cabin available. First choose the right cruise. Then determine the best available way to book it.
AmaWaterways vs. Other River Cruise Lines for Christmas Markets
AmaWaterways isn't the only river cruise company offering European holiday-season experiences. That matters.
One advantage of working with an independent river cruise specialist is the ability to evaluate multiple cruise lines rather than starting with the assumption that one company is automatically best.
Depending on the traveler, I may consider AmaWaterways alongside other river cruise companies based on ship style, cabin configuration, dining, excursions, activity level, inclusions, itinerary, service style, luxury expectations, and price and overall value.
Sometimes AmaWaterways is my recommendation. Sometimes another river cruise line is a better fit. That's what independent advice should mean.
How I Evaluate a River Cruise for My Clients
My approach is straightforward.
I inspect the ship. Whenever possible, I personally tour the cabins, public spaces, dining venues and onboard facilities.
I evaluate the cabins and public spaces. I look beyond the deck plan to understand how the spaces actually feel.
I compare competing river cruise lines. I don't evaluate a ship in a vacuum.
I consider the traveler's priorities. The traveler comes before the cruise line.
I evaluate the itinerary — not just the ship. A beautiful ship on the wrong itinerary isn't the right vacation.
I explain the trade-offs. Every river cruise line has strengths and compromises.
I recommend the option I believe fits the traveler.
That's the difference between simply booking a river cruise and advising someone about which river cruise to book.
