In many towns along the Rhine and the Danube, you step off the ship and you are already among the small, family run shops and the old town squares, within a few minutes of everything worth seeing rather than a shuttle ride away from it. That proximity is the entire reason independent exploration works so well on a river. You can take the morning tour to get your bearings and the history, then spend the afternoon on your own, wandering into a bakery or a shop that makes everything from scratch, sitting with a coffee in a square, and walking back to the ship whenever you please.
The honest caveats worth knowing before you book
There is one honest caveat about docking. During the busier months, several ships may dock side by side, which means you occasionally cross the deck of a neighboring vessel to reach the shore. It is a minor thing, and the crews coordinate it well, but I mention it because I would rather you hear it from me than be surprised by it.
