Disney's resort lineup looks confusing until you realize the tiers differ less in decor than in three practical things: location, transportation, and room size.
Value resorts
Value resorts offer the lowest on-site rates, bold theming children love, and food court dining. Transportation is primarily by bus, with the Skyliner gondola serving select resorts. Rooms are compact, typically around 260 square feet. Value suits families who rope-drop the parks and treat the room as a place to sleep, as well as longer trips where nightly rate matters most.
Moderate resorts
Moderate resorts step up to larger rooms, sit-down dining options, quieter pools with slides, and more spread out, landscaped grounds. Transportation is by bus or Skyliner depending on the resort. Moderate suits families who plan mid-day pool breaks, longer stays, and anyone who wants a calmer resort atmosphere without Deluxe pricing.
Deluxe resorts
Deluxe resorts sit closest to the parks: walking distance to Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, or Hollywood Studios depending on the resort, with monorail, boat, or Skyliner service. Rooms are larger, dining is stronger, and Deluxe guests receive extended evening hours at select parks on select nights, a meaningful perk on crowded weeks. Deluxe suits shorter trips where commute time compounds, families who value mid-day breaks, and special occasion travel.
The math that matters
Compare total trip cost, not nightly rate. A Deluxe room near Magic Kingdom can return an hour or more of park time per day in transportation savings, and evening extended hours can substitute for a Lightning Lane purchase on select nights. A Value resort plus Lightning Lane is often the better buy on longer trips. Run the comparison for your specific dates.
Practical notes
Room occupancy varies by tier and room type, so larger families should verify capacity before falling in love with a rate. Club level at Deluxe resorts adds a lounge with food and drink service at a steep premium. Booking early matters most for the room types that sleep five, which are limited in number.
