Regent Seven Seas Explorer in Alaska: Is an Ultra-Luxury Cruise Worth It?

Melissa and I sailed Regent Seven Seas Explorer from Vancouver to Anchorage in September 2024. We stayed in a Superior Suite, category F2, and the experience set a new standard for what we had experienced at sea.

Whether it is worth the fare depends on how much you value space, included service, dining, and a calm ship between Alaska port days. This is not a budget cruise with luxury added later. The entire experience is designed around refinement and having details handled for you.

The short answer

Regent Seven Seas Explorer is worth considering in Alaska when you want an adults-focused, all-inclusive experience with an exceptional suite, impeccable butler service, outstanding dining, and a refined atmosphere. It is less suitable when your priority is the lowest fare, children's programming, or large-scale entertainment.

The Superior Suite F2

The Superior Suite was extraordinary. The bed faced the balcony window, so we could wake up to Alaska scenery without moving. A true walk-in closet provided enough room for an extended sailing.

The bathroom had double sinks, a large vanity, a separate bathtub, and the finest shower we have seen at sea. These details matter on a longer itinerary because the suite becomes more than a place to sleep. It becomes a comfortable private space for watching the landscape change.

Butler service

Our butler service was impeccable. The minibar was stocked to our preferences, laundry returned perfectly pressed and folded, and requests were handled quietly and promptly.

The value is not only in having tasks completed. It is in how little attention those tasks require from the guest. That creates more time for the destination and the people traveling with you.

Dining and spa

The food on Explorer was the best we have had on any ship, river or ocean. We did not dine at Sette Mari at La Veranda, so we cannot evaluate that restaurant from firsthand experience.

The spa was another highlight. Its cold room and heated lounge chairs compared favorably with the best spas we have visited anywhere. On an Alaska itinerary, a quiet spa space is a natural complement to cool-weather port days and scenic sailing.

How Alaska fits the ship

Our route from Vancouver to Anchorage put Alaska's scenery at the center of the trip. The ship's unhurried atmosphere and the Superior Suite's balcony-facing bed made it easy to appreciate the landscape without chasing constant onboard activity.

One practical note matters in Ketchikan: Regent docks at the NCL port a few miles outside town. A shuttle is provided. The terminal building had a broad shopping selection, but travelers should account for the transfer when planning time in town.

Who gets the strongest value?

Explorer makes the strongest case for travelers who would otherwise add premium dining, beverages, a larger suite, spa time, and personalized service to another cruise. Looking only at the headline fare can hide how differently the trip is structured.

It is also a strong fit for adults who want Alaska without a crowded, resort-style ship. Families needing extensive children's programming or travelers seeking big theatrical spectacle should compare other options.

The bottom line

For us, Explorer justified its ultra-luxury position through the suite, dining, spa, and service rather than through spectacle. The string quartet playing as we sailed away captured the experience: polished, calm, and intentional.
