I had the opportunity to personally inspect Tauck's ms Joy during the ASTA River Cruise Expo. Ship inspections are an important part of how I evaluate river cruises for my clients.
A deck plan can tell me the dimensions of a cabin. A brochure can tell me what's included. But neither can completely tell me how a ship feels when I walk onboard. That's one reason I continue to personally inspect river cruise ships across different cruise lines.
What I Noticed Immediately About ms Joy
My immediate reaction to ms Joy was: Rich. Deep. Elegant. Beautiful.
There was a sophistication to the ship that I noticed almost immediately. This wasn't luxury that felt like it was trying to get my attention. Instead, I found the interiors warm and refined, with a richness to the furnishings and finishes that gave the ship an elegant European feeling.
That distinction matters. Travelers sometimes use the word "luxury" as though it means the same thing on every cruise line. It doesn't. Some luxury ships feel modern and contemporary. Some feel glamorous. Some are minimalist.
ms Joy struck me as understated, traditional and sophisticated. For the right traveler, that's a very appealing combination.
How Large Is Tauck ms Joy?
ms Joy is a 443-foot riverboat carrying a maximum of 130 guests. That passenger count is something I pay attention to when inspecting river cruise ships.
River ships operate within similar physical restrictions because they must navigate Europe's rivers, locks and bridges. How a cruise company chooses to use that available space can therefore make a noticeable difference.
ms Joy has 67 cabins, including 22 Tauck Suites measuring 300 square feet. Those larger suites are particularly noteworthy in the river cruise market.
The Tauck Suites on ms Joy
One of the features I would want travelers considering ms Joy to understand is Tauck's emphasis on interior living space. The ship's 300-square-foot Tauck Suites provide substantially more room than many standard European river cruise accommodations.
When I'm advising a client, however, I don't automatically recommend purchasing the largest suite. I consider:
- How much time the traveler spends in the cabin
- Whether additional living space matters
- Cabin location
- Bathroom configuration
- Storage needs
- The itinerary
- The traveler's budget
- Whether the upgrade will meaningfully improve their experience
The most expensive cabin isn't automatically the best cabin for every traveler. My job is to determine where spending more actually makes sense.
A Different Approach to River Cruise Balconies
One of the things travelers should understand when comparing river cruise ships is that balcony terminology can be confusing.
A traditional step-out balcony uses some of the ship's limited width for outdoor space. A French balcony allows travelers to open the cabin to the river while keeping more of that square footage inside the room.
Tauck emphasizes interior space on its riverboats, and many accommodations use French balconies rather than sacrificing significant interior space for exterior balconies.
Neither design is universally better. It depends on how you travel. This is exactly the kind of difference I discuss with clients before choosing a river cruise cabin.
The Loft Cabins on ms Joy
ms Joy also has an unusual accommodation option: eight loft cabins. These cabins extend upward from the lower deck to create additional height and natural light, with windows in the loft area that open.
I like seeing river cruise companies think creatively about lower-deck accommodations because lower-deck cabins traditionally have limited window configurations due to their proximity to the waterline.
For some travelers, these loft cabins may be worth considering. For others, I may recommend putting the additional budget toward a different cabin category. Again, it comes back to the individual traveler.
Dining on Tauck ms Joy
ms Joy offers two primary dining venues.
The Compass Rose
The Compass Rose is the main dining room. It offers open seating and flexible dining times, with panoramic windows overlooking the river.
Arthur's
Arthur's provides a more casual alternative, including lighter breakfast choices and casual options for lunch and dinner.
I like seeing more than one dining environment on a river ship. River cruises are intimate experiences, and having a second place to dine can provide welcome variety during a longer sailing.
What Is Included on a Tauck River Cruise?
This is one of the areas where Tauck deserves serious consideration when comparing river cruise pricing.
Tauck's river cruise product is highly inclusive. Depending on the itinerary, inclusions can extend beyond the ship itself and include excursions and distinctive experiences ashore.
Onboard ms Joy, complimentary beverages include regional wine, beer, premium spirits, specialty coffee, water and soft drinks. Wi-Fi is complimentary, although—as with virtually any river cruise—internet performance can depend on location.
But there's another inclusion I think travelers sometimes overlook: Gratuities.
Tauck includes gratuities for Tauck Directors, the Cruise Director, ship staff, local guides and luggage handling as part of its river cruise experience. That matters when comparing the real cost of one river cruise against another.
I encourage my clients not to compare river cruises based solely on the advertised cabin price. Compare what you'll actually spend.
Life Onboard ms Joy
ms Joy isn't trying to recreate a large ocean cruise ship. That's not the point of river cruising.
The ship includes spaces and amenities such as:
- Panorama Lounge and Bar
- Sun Deck
- Plunge pool
- Putting green
- Fitness center
- Massage services
- Bicycles for use ashore
- Enrichment programming
- Piano music
- Culinary demonstrations
- Local entertainment
But for me, the most important feature of a river cruise ship is still its relationship with the destination. You're there to experience Europe. The ship should enhance that experience rather than compete with it.
Who I Think Tauck ms Joy Is Best For
Based on my firsthand inspection, I would particularly consider ms Joy for travelers who appreciate:
- Understated luxury. The atmosphere felt rich and sophisticated rather than flashy.
- More personal space. Tauck deliberately carries fewer guests than many similarly sized European river ships.
- Larger accommodations. The 300-square-foot Tauck Suites can be very attractive to travelers accustomed to larger hotel rooms or cruise suites.
- A highly inclusive experience. Travelers who don't enjoy constantly calculating additional expenses may appreciate Tauck's approach.
- Destination-focused travel. Tauck places significant emphasis on experiences ashore, not simply the ship.
- Service and guided travel. Travelers who appreciate having experienced professionals managing the details may find Tauck particularly appealing.
Who Might Prefer Another River Cruise Line?
This is just as important as telling you who I think will love the ship. I don't believe any river cruise line is right for everyone.
A traveler looking for a very contemporary, cutting-edge interior aesthetic might prefer another product. Someone whose primary goal is finding the lowest possible river cruise fare may also find Tauck difficult to compare purely on initial price because so much of the experience is bundled into the cost.
And travelers who prefer to arrange almost every aspect of their trip independently may not place the same value on Tauck's guided and inclusive approach.
A beautiful ship can still be the wrong ship for a particular traveler. That's why I compare rather than simply recommend.
ms Joy vs. Other Luxury River Cruise Ships
This is where my firsthand ship inspections become especially useful. I've inspected river cruise ships across multiple cruise lines, including Tauck, AmaWaterways, Riverside, Avalon, Viking, Scenic and others. Each approaches the river cruise experience differently.
When comparing ms Joy with another ship, I look beyond which one appears more luxurious in photographs. I compare:
- Cabin size and configuration
- Public spaces
- Dining
- Service model
- Inclusions
- Excursions
- Ship atmosphere
- Passenger count
- Itinerary
- Overall value
- Most importantly, the traveler
My goal isn't to determine which river cruise line is universally "best." My goal is to determine which is best for you.
My Advisor Verdict on Tauck ms Joy
After personally inspecting Tauck ms Joy, the word I keep returning to is refined.
I found her beautiful. The interiors felt deep, rich and sophisticated, and there was a sense of understated luxury that distinguished the ship from some of the other river cruise products I've inspected.
But what makes ms Joy particularly interesting isn't simply how she looks. It's the combination of fewer guests, substantial interior space, large suites, an inclusive approach and Tauck's emphasis on experiences ashore.
For a traveler looking for an intimate, sophisticated and highly inclusive European river cruise experience, ms Joy deserves serious consideration.
Would I recommend her to everyone? No. And that's exactly why I personally inspect ships. The right river cruise isn't simply the one with the prettiest brochure. It's the one that fits the traveler.
