Why Uniworld Is a Top Pick for National WWII Museum Travelers

Uniworld did not design a themed shore excursion and call it heritage travel. Working directly with the National WWII Museum in New Orleans, the river cruise line charters an entire ship once each year for a single, purpose built journey along the Seine, and it brings two serious historians along for the whole trip. For a specialty built around World War II and military history, this is the kind of program worth knowing by name.

An Exclusively Chartered Ship Built Around One Journey

The program is called Paris to Pointe du Hoc, A Voyage along the Seine to the Beaches of Normandy. The ship is Uniworld's S.S. Joie de Vivre, chartered exclusively for this journey and described by Uniworld as quite possibly the finest river ship on the waterways of Europe. Only one departure is offered each year. The 2026 sailing runs October 25 through November 2, with an optional Paris extension from October 23 to 25 for guests who want extra time in the city before boarding.

Two Historians Most Cruise Lines Could Never Book

Two featured historians travel with the group for the full nine days. James Holland is an internationally acclaimed World War II historian and author, known for grounding big military history in the experience of individual soldiers and civilians. Ben Milligan is a former Navy SEAL and Naval Special Warfare historian, bringing a tactical and operational perspective that most cruise lecturers simply do not have. Pairing a career historian with a former special operator on the same sailing is not something you will find on a standard Seine itinerary.

From the Seine to the Sand of Omaha Beach

The river portion of the journey carries guests from Paris through La Roche Guyon, a 12th century château on the Seine that served as Field Marshal Erwin Rommel's headquarters during the German occupation, then on through Les Andelys, Versailles, Rouen, and Dieppe. From there, the group moves off the ship entirely and into château based touring around Bayeux, within easy reach of the D-Day beaches and battlefields themselves. The itinerary includes Pegasus Bridge, Utah Beach, Brecourt Manor, Pointe du Hoc, Omaha Beach, and the Normandy American Cemetery, walked with historians who can explain not just what happened on each piece of ground, but why it mattered to the wider campaign.

Why This Fits Our Historical and Heritage Specialty

This is exactly the kind of program our Historical and Heritage Cruising specialty was built to find. Tyler Muench focuses on World War II, military history, and European history, and a once a year sailing built around real historians and real battlefields, rather than a generic heritage themed shore excursion, is precisely what a serious history traveler should be looking for. Programs like this one from Uniworld and the National WWII Museum sit alongside the historian led voyages we have already covered from Holland America, Regent Seven Seas, and Ponant Explorations, and they are exactly why this specialty keeps growing.

If a single annual sailing built around two respected WWII historians and the actual beaches of Normandy sounds like the kind of trip worth planning your year around, we would be glad to help you look into it.
