The good news is that the decision is not complicated once you know what to ask. This guide will walk you through every meaningful difference between the two lines so that by the end you know exactly which one is right for you, or whether a third option might serve you better.

One thing worth stating clearly at the start: both lines are good. This is not a comparison where one wins and one loses. It is a comparison where the right answer depends entirely on who you are and what you want from your time on the river.

The excursion program on AmaWaterways is organized into three levels at every port. The gentle level covers bus tours, walking tours, and shorter outings suited to any fitness level. The mid-level covers longer excursions, gondola rides, wine tours, and more time on your feet. The active level covers cycling, hiking, and more physically demanding experiences. At most ports all three tiers run simultaneously, which means a multigenerational group can split up at the gangway and each person does exactly what fits them. I have seen this play out on the Rhine with families where the youngest members did a 16-mile bike ride through the Rhine Valley, the parents did a guided city walking tour, and the older family members stayed aboard. Everyone was happy. Everyone had the right experience for them.

AmaWaterways is also the right choice for travelers who want more regional authenticity in their food and beverage experience. Regional wine and beer are included at lunch, during cocktail hour, and at dinner. Wines are sourced from the regions the ship is sailing through. The bar is available for additional cocktails. Who Viking Is Built For

Viking is the right choice when comfort, familiarity, and a relaxed adults-only atmosphere matter most. Viking markets almost exclusively to American and Canadian travelers, and that intentional focus shows in every aspect of the experience. The ships are consistent, the service is reliable, and the experience is recognizable from one sailing to the next.

If you have sailed Viking before and loved it, you will love it again. That consistency is not a weakness. For a certain type of traveler it is exactly the point. Viking clients often tell me that they chose Viking because they knew what they were getting. The Scandinavian design is clean and simple. The staircase is notably wide for a river ship. The coffee and tea bar is beautifully done. Everything is calm and uncluttered.

Viking is adults-only across all sailings, which makes it a strong choice for couples and groups of friends who specifically do not want children on board. It is also my consistent recommendation for any itinerary in Scandinavia. Viking knows Scandinavia better than any other river line and delivers those itineraries exceptionally well.

Viking clients tend to skew toward the 60 and older demographic, often retired, often repeat Viking travelers from ocean or river sailings. They want comfort. They want meals that feel familiar alongside regional options. They want to have a hamburger if they want one. They want a recognizable brand experience. Viking delivers all of that consistently and at a price point that feels justified for what is included.

Excursions — The Biggest Practical Difference

AmaWaterways Excursions

AmaWaterways includes a robust excursion program at every port with multiple activity levels running simultaneously. The gentle level, the mid-level, and the active level all operate at the same time so travelers self-select based on what suits them that day. There is no upcharge for choosing the active excursion over the gentle one. The variety is included in the fare.

This structure is what makes AmaWaterways exceptional for multigenerational travel. It is also what makes it the right choice for travelers who want to feel like they are genuinely experiencing each destination rather than seeing it from a bus window.

Viking Excursions

Viking includes one guided excursion per port, typically a walking tour of the main city or town. Additional excursions are available for purchase and the price varies by city and excursion type. If you plan to purchase additional excursions at multiple ports, this cost adds up quickly and should be factored into any price comparison with AmaWaterways.

This is one of the most important practical points I make when clients say Viking is less expensive than AmaWaterways. The base fare comparison does not tell the full story. A traveler who wants to do two or three excursions per port on Viking will spend considerably more than the base fare suggests. A traveler who is content with one guided walk per port will find Viking's inclusion level perfectly adequate.

Dining and Beverages

AmaWaterways Dining

AmaWaterways has an outstanding menu with a strong regional focus. The food changes with the itinerary, reflecting the cuisine of the rivers and regions the ship is sailing through. Regional wine and beer are included at lunch, cocktail hour, and dinner. The bar is available for additional cocktails and beverages throughout the day.

I sailed AmaViola and AmaSerena and found the food on both to be a genuine highlight. The regional focus is authentic and the quality is consistently strong across both the main dining room and the specialty dining options available on board.

AmaWaterways is also the right choice for vegetarian travelers. I eat vegetarian, and I have consistently found excellent options on AmaWaterways sailings and have never left a meal feeling like an afterthought.

Viking Dining

Viking's dining is good and the menu offers a mix of regional dishes alongside more familiar options. Viking clients often appreciate having a hamburger or a recognizable comfort food option available alongside the European regional menu. The quality is solid and the dining experience is pleasant and unhurried.

Viking includes beverages with meals as well, though the regional wine focus is not as pronounced as AmaWaterways. The overall dining experience on Viking is comfortable and consistent, which is exactly what Viking clients tend to want.

In direct comparison, I consider AmaWaterways the stronger option for food-focused travelers. Viking's dining is good but not the reason to choose Viking. AmaWaterways dining is often one of the highlights of the sailing.

Cabins and the Twin Balcony Experience

AmaWaterways Cabin Categories

AmaWaterways is known for the twin balcony cabin, which is one of the most distinctive cabin features on any river cruise ship. The twin balcony gives guests two separate balcony experiences in one cabin: a French balcony, which is a floor-to-ceiling sliding glass door that opens inward with a railing and no outdoor sitting space, and a full outside balcony with two chairs and a table where guests can sit, have a coffee, enjoy a beverage, and watch the river and passing scenery.

Terry and I sail the twin balcony consistently and consider it one of the best features of AmaWaterways. The French balcony side allows cool air to flow in when desired. The outside balcony is where we spend mornings with coffee and evenings watching the river. For first-time river cruisers who want the full river cruise experience, the twin balcony is my consistent recommendation on AmaWaterways.

Cabin positioning also matters on AmaWaterways. I recommend midship to forward, Deck 2 or higher. The ride is smoother in the middle of the ship and positioning toward the forward makes getting back to your cabin easier after long days of excursions.

Viking Cabin Categories

Viking cabins follow the consistent Scandinavian design that defines the entire brand. The aesthetic is clean, simple, and uncluttered. The staircase on Viking longships is notably wide for a river ship, which is a practical comfort that guests notice and appreciate.

Viking offers three main cabin categories: full balcony, French balcony, and window. I strongly recommend booking at minimum a French balcony on Viking. The majority of my clients book the full balcony. I have had two clients book window cabins and both called afterward asking if they could upgrade to a balcony. In both cases the balcony cabins were sold out. The river scenery is the point of a river cruise. A cabin with a window but no balcony access limits the experience in a way that is difficult to appreciate until you are on the ship watching the Rhine Gorge or the Wachau Valley go by and cannot step outside.

For anyone booking Viking, book at minimum a French balcony. If the budget allows, book the full balcony.

Pricing and What Is Actually Included

Price comparisons between AmaWaterways and Viking require careful reading because what each line includes at the base fare level is different.

What AmaWaterways Includes

AmaWaterways includes the cabin, all meals, regional wine and beer with meals and at cocktail hour, excursions at multiple activity levels at every port, and most gratuities depending on the fare category. The excursion inclusion is meaningful. Travelers who want to be active at every port will find that the value of what is included at AmaWaterways is substantial.

What Viking Includes

Viking includes the cabin, all meals, beverages with meals, one guided excursion per port, and Wi-Fi. Additional excursions are available for purchase. The base fare on Viking can appear lower than AmaWaterways, but travelers who purchase additional excursions at multiple ports will close that gap quickly. I consistently ask clients to add up the excursions they plan to purchase before concluding that Viking is less expensive.

The Real Price Comparison

For a traveler who wants one guided walk per port and is content with that level of shore experience, Viking's inclusion level is adequate and the price point may genuinely be lower. For a traveler who wants two or three excursions per port, or who wants the active excursion tier, AmaWaterways will often represent stronger overall value when the full cost of excursions is factored in.

There is no universal answer to which line is less expensive. The honest answer is that it depends on what you plan to do at each port.

AmaWaterways attracts an international mix of travelers from across the world. The atmosphere on board reflects that diversity. The food is regional. The excursions are varied. The energy on the ship tends to be active and engaged. Families, couples, multigenerational groups, and solo travelers all sail AmaWaterways and the excursion structure accommodates all of them simultaneously.

AmaWaterways ships are bright and bold in their interior design, with warm colors and an inviting atmosphere. The ships feel energetic and the days tend to be full.

Viking Brand and Atmosphere

Viking markets primarily to American and Canadian travelers and the experience reflects that focus. The atmosphere is calm, familiar, and consistent. The Scandinavian design is elegant and understated. The ships feel quiet and unhurried. Guests tend to be 60 and older, often retired, often repeat Viking travelers.

Viking is the dominant brand for river cruising in the American market. Its marketing is ubiquitous and its brand recognition is extraordinary. Many of my Viking clients come to me already knowing they want Viking. My job is often to help them choose the right itinerary and cabin category rather than the line itself.
