Destination Guides

Where to Sail in Europe, Region by Region

Every European itinerary has a personality. These quick guides help you match the region to the trip you actually want.

  • Western Mediterranean

    Barcelona · Marseille · Rome · Florence/Pisa · Naples

The classic first European cruise. Seven nights from Barcelona or Rome covers three countries with no packing and unpacking. Expect long, full port days and sophisticated food at every stop.

    Season:
    April to October
    Best for:
First-time European cruisers, food lovers, multigenerational groups
  • Croatia and the Adriatic

    Dubrovnik · Split · Hvar · Kotor · Venice

Terry's most recommended European voyage. Smaller ships slip into walled harbors that mega-ships cannot reach, and the Dalmatian Coast rewards travelers who linger past sunset.

    Season:
    May to October
    Best for:
    Couples, small-ship enthusiasts, return cruisers
  • Greek Isles and Eastern Mediterranean

    Athens · Santorini · Mykonos · Rhodes · Ephesus

Whitewashed villages, ancient ruins, and the bluest water in Europe. Choose shoulder season for cooler ruins walks and calmer caldera views.

    Season:
    May to October
    Best for:
    History buffs, photographers, honeymooners
  • Norwegian Fjords

    Bergen · Geiranger · Flåm · Ålesund · Stavanger

Sail-in mornings through Geirangerfjord rival anything in Alaska. Pack layers, book a balcony on the scenic side, and plan at least one mountain-top excursion.

    Season:
    May to September
    Best for:
Nature lovers, Alaska veterans, scenic-cruising fans
  • British Isles

    Southampton · Edinburgh · Invergordon · Belfast · Dublin · Cork

Castles, whisky, and dramatic coastlines in one circuit. Round-trip from Southampton makes air simple, and port days are packed with meaningful history.

    Season:
    May to September
    Best for:
Heritage travelers, whisky and pub culture, easy logistics
  • Transatlantic Crossings

Fort Lauderdale or New York to Southampton, Barcelona, or Rome

Repositioning sailings deliver 12 to 16 nights at some of the best per-night value in cruising. Expect enrichment lectures, sea days to unwind, and a gentle time-zone shift.

    Season:
    April/May eastbound · October/November westbound
    Best for:
Slow travelers, value seekers, sea-day devotees

Port Highlights

Make the Most of Every Port Day

One insider tip for the ports that appear again and again on the best European itineraries.

  • Dubrovnik, Croatia

Walk the city walls at opening time, before the tour groups arrive, then take the cable car for the classic Old Town panorama.

  • Santorini, Greece

Tender early and head to Oia first. Reverse the crowd flow and you will have the blue domes nearly to yourself.

  • Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy

Rome is 90 minutes away. Book a private driver or ship excursion; the train works but leaves no margin for error on all-aboard time.

  • Geiranger, Norway

Be on deck by 6 a.m. for the sail-in past the Seven Sisters waterfall. Eagle Road viewpoint is the must-do excursion.

  • Kotor, Montenegro

The bay approach is the highlight. Then climb to the fortress of San Giovanni; 1,350 steps, worth every one.

  • Edinburgh (South Queensferry), Scotland

This is a tender port. Book an excursion or accept a slower start. The Royal Mile and Castle deserve a full day.

  • Lisbon, Portugal

Ships dock steps from Alfama. Ride Tram 28 early, then linger over pastéis de nata in Belém.

  • Barcelona, Spain

Reserve Sagrada Família tickets weeks ahead. Arrive a day early if embarking; it is a city that punishes rushed visits.

Sailing Tips

What Terry Tells Every European Cruise Client

  1. 01

    Arrive one day early, always

Transatlantic flights and European rail strikes are unpredictable. A pre-cruise hotel night protects your embarkation and lets you start rested.

  2. 02

    Choose ship size by itinerary

Large ships suit Western Med capitals. Croatia, Greek Isles, and the fjords shine on mid-size and luxury vessels that reach smaller harbors.

  3. 03

Shoulder season is the sweet spot

May, June, September, and early October offer milder weather, thinner crowds, and better pricing than July and August.

  4. 04

Book the balcony on the scenic side

In the fjords and the Adriatic, the sail-ins are the show. Terry knows which side faces the view on each itinerary.

  5. 05

Plan port days around all-aboard time

European ports often sit far from the cities they serve. Build a buffer, and lean on private guides for far-flung stops like Rome and Florence.

  6. 06

Pack for four seasons in one sailing

Northern Europe can be 50°F while the Med hits 90°F. Layers, a packable rain shell, and broken-in walking shoes are non-negotiable.
