AmaPrima Review: AmaWaterways' Classic Twin-Balcony Ship, Explained
The AmaPrima was the ship that introduced AmaWaterways' twin-balcony stateroom, and more than a decade later she still delivers the classic Ama experience at often-friendlier fares. Here is what she offers, where she sails, and when I recommend her over a newer sister.

I have not sailed the AmaPrima yet, and this guide says so plainly. It draws on AmaWaterways deck plans and specialist training, debriefs from clients I have placed on board, and my own sailings on later ships built to the same design she pioneered. It will become a firsthand review after I sail her.

Where the AmaPrima Fits
When the AmaPrima launched in 2013 she was AmaWaterways' most ambitious ship: the first with the twin-balcony stateroom in most categories, a heated sun-deck pool with a swim-up bar, and the Chef's Table aft. Nearly every Ama ship built since, including the AmaViola I sailed, follows the template she set.
She carries around 164 guests on a 135-meter hull, a few more than the newer builds, and she has been refreshed to keep pace with the fleet. What you get is the complete AmaWaterways program on a ship that, because she is not the newest, sometimes carries the best fares on a given route.
The AmaPrima moves between the Rhine, Main, and Danube depending on season, which makes her one of the ships most likely to appear on the longer Amsterdam-to-Budapest Grand European journeys and on Christmas market sailings on both rivers.

What to Expect on Board
- The original twin-balcony ship: French balcony plus separate step-out balcony in most upper-deck staterooms
- Slightly higher guest count than the newer sisters, so a marginally busier lounge and restaurant at peak times
- The Chef's Table aft, included in the fare and the meal to plan the week around
- Heated sun-deck pool with swim-up bar, fitness room, massage room, and complimentary bicycles
- A classic, warm interior style rather than the lighter contemporary look of the 2020s builds
- Standard hull width, so she transits locks on the Rhine, Main, and Danube and can run the longer Grand European route
- Frequently the most competitively priced AmaWaterways ship on a route, without a reduction in inclusions
The Right Fit
Who I Recommend This For
The AmaPrima is a strong fit for:
- Value-minded AmaWaterways clients
- Same inclusions, same excursion tiers, same Chef's Table, often at a lower fare than the newest ship on the same dates. If ship age is not a priority, she is a smart buy.
- Travelers doing the long Grand European route
- Amsterdam to Budapest over two weeks via the Rhine, Main, and Main-Danube Canal is the most complete European river journey, and the AmaPrima is often assigned to it.
- Christmas market cruisers who want options
- Because she moves between rivers, the AmaPrima's holiday dates can cover either the Rhine markets or the Danube markets in a given year. Ask me which she is on for your season.
- Repeat Ama guests who love the classic feel
- Guests who prefer the warmer, more traditional interiors of the 2010s ships over the newer light-wood look tend to be very happy here.

Who I Would Not Recommend This For
No ship is right for everyone, and I would rather tell you that now than after you book.
- Travelers who want the newest ship
- She is a 2013 build. Well maintained and refreshed, but if new is a priority, look at the AmaSiena, AmaLucia, or AmaMagna.
- Guests with significant mobility limits
- Read the Accessibility Note below. Older river ships have the same structural limits as new ones and sometimes fewer refinements.
- Guests who want the AmaMagna's amenities
- Multiple restaurants, a wellness studio, and butler suites belong to the AmaMagna. The AmaPrima is a classic river ship.

Cabins
The AmaPrima's staterooms established the design I have slept in on later ships: a floor-to-ceiling French balcony alongside a separate outside sitting balcony in most Violin and Cello Deck categories. The room itself is efficient rather than large, with solid storage and a compact bathroom.
Piano Deck staterooms have fixed windows and are the value entry. A small number of suites at the top of the plan add living space and a larger balcony.
Because she is an earlier build, expect fewer outlets and USB ports than on the 2020s ships; bring a small multi-port charger. Ask me about specific stateroom numbers, since a handful sit near the engine or the lounge and are best avoided by light sleepers.

Dining
Dining is the full AmaWaterways program: regional menus in the main restaurant, complimentary wine, beer, and soft drinks at lunch and dinner, the Sip & Sail hour, and the Chef's Table aft included in the fare. Reserve the Chef's Table as soon as you board; it seats few and fills fast.
The lounge covers early and late breakfasts, a light lunch, afternoon tea, and evening tapas. Standards do not vary by ship age in my experience; AmaWaterways' galleys are consistent across the fleet.

Excursions & Ports
Included excursions in CLASSIC, GENTLE, and ACTIVE tiers, plus Limited Edition small-group options, with complimentary bicycles for guided and independent rides. On the Grand European route the range is enormous, from Cologne's cathedral to Würzburg's Residenz to Vienna's Ringstrasse.

- The cathedral and Old Town, a short walk from the dock.
- Rüdesheim & the Rhine Gorge
- Castles, vineyards, and the finest scenic cruising on the Rhine.

- Main River highlights: the Residenz, the smoked beer, the half-timbered town hall on the bridge.
- Nuremberg & Regensburg
- Medieval Bavaria, and in season two of Germany's best Christmas markets.
- Vienna & Budapest
- The imperial finale of the Grand European journey.

The layout is the AmaWaterways standard she helped define: lounge and bar forward with panoramic windows, main restaurant midship, Chef's Table aft, and a sun deck with pool, whirlpool, walking track, and shaded seating. Interiors are warmer and more traditional than the newest builds, with rich woods and classic upholstery.

AmaWaterways' service culture is fleet-wide, and clients back from the AmaPrima describe exactly what I experienced on the AmaViola: a crew that learns names fast, a cruise manager who sets the tone, and a level of personal attention that makes the ship feel smaller than it is.

Best Itinerary
If the AmaPrima is on it for your dates, Magnificent Europe (Amsterdam to Budapest, fourteen nights) is the one to choose. It links the Rhine, Main, and Danube through the Main-Danube Canal and delivers Cologne, the Rhine Gorge, Würzburg, Bamberg, Nuremberg, Regensburg, Passau, Vienna, and Budapest in a single journey.

Important
Accessibility Note
The AmaPrima's elevator serves the main passenger decks but not the sun deck. Staterooms and bathrooms are not wheelchair-accessible, and gangways vary from gentle to steep with water level and dock position; on the Main and Main-Danube Canal, docks can be more rustic than on the Rhine.
AmaWaterways requires guests to board and disembark without assistance. If anyone in your party has mobility concerns, let us discuss it honestly before booking.
