Is AmaWaterways the Right Choice for a Rhine Christmas Market Cruise?
AmaWaterways fits travelers who want an active, social, food-focused river cruise with strong included touring. The line carries fewer passengers than Viking on comparable ships, includes excursions at gentle, regular and active paces, and offers a lineup of wellness activities that matters more than you might expect on a week of market food.
It may not be the right fit if your priority is the lowest possible fare, a very large ship with lots of venues, or a formal luxury atmosphere with butlers and caviar. Viking usually prices lower on entry cabins, and lines like Riverside position more formal. I do not believe any line is universally best; the right answer depends on what you value. What I Know About AmaSerena
Everything in this section is firsthand: I have personally sailed AmaSerena on the Rhine and have also inspected the ship.
AmaSerena carries about 164 guests, which is on the smaller side for the Rhine and you feel it in the best way: the crew learns names quickly, the dining room never feels crowded, and you recognize your fellow travelers by the second day.
Cabins and the twin balcony. Most balcony cabins on AmaSerena use AmaWaterways' twin balcony configuration: a French balcony (a floor-to-ceiling sliding glass door with a railing) plus a small step-out balcony. In practice the French balcony is what you use in colder months, for light and air, while the step-out balcony shines in warm weather. Cabin layouts are efficient, with good storage for a river ship; the bathrooms are compact but well designed.
Dining. The main dining room serves a full breakfast and lunch service plus multi-course dinners, and the Chef's Table at the stern is the standout: a reservation-only tasting-menu venue with open views of the wake, included in the fare. Food quality is a genuine strength of the line.
Public spaces. The lounge and bar are the social heart of the ship, the sun deck has a heated pool and a walking track, and there is a small fitness room. The atmosphere is warm and social rather than formal or hushed.
Who the ship suits. Couples and friend groups who like to be active during the day and sociable in the evening. Travelers who need step-free access to every deck should note that, like most river ships, the elevator does not reach the sun deck or the lowest accommodation deck.

AmaWaterways Rhine Christmas Market Itineraries
AmaWaterways' Rhine Christmas market sailings typically run seven nights between Amsterdam and Basel, in both directions, calling at Cologne, the Rhine Gorge with Rüdesheim, the Heidelberg or Speyer area, Strasbourg and Breisach for the Alsace markets. Exact itinerary names, the assigned ships, departure dates and port sequences can change from one sailing year to the next, and sister ships are sometimes swapped into the route.

What to Think About Before You Choose Your Sailing
- Dates and market opening windows. Market dates vary annually and by town. Verify them against your specific sailing, especially for late-November and Christmas-week departures.
- Itinerary direction. Amsterdam to Basel and Basel to Amsterdam visit the same markets in reverse order; flights and how the week builds usually decide it.
- Specific ports. If Strasbourg or Cologne is your priority, confirm how long the ship stays and whether you get an evening there.
- Ship and cabin category. Know which ship is assigned to your date and which cabin category actually fits how you travel.
- Walking ability and activity level. Markets mean hours on your feet on cobblestones. AmaWaterways' gentle-pace excursions help, but be honest about your days.
- Excursion preferences. Walking tours, culinary tours, bike tours and gentle options are not identical across lines or even across ports.
- Pre- and post-cruise plans. Amsterdam, Lucerne, Zurich or Paris bookends change your flights and your energy.

AmaWaterways vs. Other Rhine Christmas Market Lines
The main alternatives on this route are Viking, Avalon, Uniworld, Scenic, Tauck and Riverside. Broadly: Viking runs more ships and more dates, usually at lower entry fares, with larger passenger counts. Avalon competes closely on cabin design and price.
