My First Impression
I sailed AmaSerena in March 2024 during the ASTA River Cruise Expo soft opening on the Netherlands waterways at the start of tulip season. The deep red and gold interior gave the ship a rich, traditional personality from the moment I stepped aboard.
The detail I remember most clearly was the fresh tulips throughout the ship. They connected the onboard atmosphere to the Netherlands itinerary in a thoughtful way. The crew delivered the warm service culture I expect from AmaWaterways while settling the ship into its new season.

- Unlike the wider AmaMagna, AmaSerena fits the traditional locks, so she can run the Rhine, Main, and Danube on a single sailing.
- Couples who want a real balcony
- The twin balcony design gives you a full step-out balcony plus a French balcony in the same stateroom, which is still uncommon on the rivers.
- Active travelers
- The ACTIVE excursion tier, guided bike tours, and complimentary onboard bicycles make this a good fit for guests who like to move.

Who I Would Not Recommend This For
- Travelers who want maximum onboard space
- If wide-body common areas, a water sports platform, and multiple full restaurants matter more than the itinerary, the AmaMagna is the better AmaWaterways ship for you.
- Guests seeking all-suite luxury
- AmaSerena is premium rather than ultra-luxury. Travelers who want butler service and truly all-inclusive fares should look at Scenic or Riverside.
- Anyone wanting resort-style amenities
- There is a pool and a fitness area, but this is a river ship. The destination, not the vessel, is the main event.

The majority of AmaSerena’s staterooms use the twin balcony layout, with suites available at the top of the range and fixed-window cabins on the lowest deck at the entry price. My usual guidance: if the budget allows, take a twin balcony on a middle deck. It is the sweet spot for light, view, and quiet.

The main restaurant serves open-seating breakfast, lunch, and dinner with regionally driven menus that follow the itinerary. The Chef’s Table specialty restaurant is included in the fare, with a multi-course tasting menu prepared in an open kitchen; you simply reserve a night. My practical tip is to choose that evening carefully. A multi-course dinner can overlap with scenic sailing, a late departure, or valuable time ashore, so review the schedule before reserving.
Wine, beer, and soft drinks accompany lunch and dinner, and the daily sip-and-sail hour is included. AmaWaterways is a member of La Chaîne des Rôtisseurs, and the kitchen takes that seriously.
