My Firsthand Inspection of Tauck ms Joy

I had the opportunity to personally inspect Tauck’s ms Joy during the ASTA River Cruise Expo. Ship inspections are an important part of how I evaluate river cruises for my clients.

A deck plan can tell me the dimensions of a cabin. A brochure can tell me what is included. But neither can completely tell me how a ship feels when I walk onboard. That is one reason I continue to personally inspect river cruise ships across different cruise lines.

What stood out to me was not flashiness. It was the combination of elegant materials, warm interiors, spacious accommodations and an intimate atmosphere that made the ship feel refined.

What I Noticed

My Rapid-Fire Observations

  • Rich, deep, elegant interiors — sophistication rather than sparkle
  • 443 feet long carrying a maximum of 130 guests, so the ship never feels crowded
  • 67 cabins including 22 Tauck Suites at roughly 300 square feet
  • Eight loft cabins on the lower deck with upper windows that actually open
  • French balconies chosen deliberately, preserving interior living space
  • Two dining venues: the Compass Rose main restaurant and the casual Arthur's
  • Regional wine, beer, premium spirits, specialty coffee and soft drinks included
  • Gratuities for Tauck Directors, ship staff, local guides and luggage handling included

The Ship

How Large Is Tauck ms Joy?

ms Joy is a 443-foot riverboat carrying a maximum of 130 guests. That passenger count is something I pay attention to when inspecting river cruise ships.

River ships operate within similar physical restrictions because they must navigate Europe’s rivers, locks and bridges. How a cruise company chooses to use that available space can therefore make a noticeable difference.

ms Joy has 67 cabins, including 22 Tauck Suites measuring 300 square feet. Those larger suites are particularly noteworthy in the river cruise market.

Onboard

The Suites, Balconies and Loft Cabins

Tauck emphasizes interior living space. The 300-square-foot Tauck Suites provide substantially more room than many standard European river cruise accommodations. When advising a client, though, I do not automatically recommend the largest suite. I consider how much time the traveler spends in the cabin, whether the extra living space matters, cabin location, bathroom configuration, storage, itinerary and budget.

Balcony terminology can also be confusing. A traditional step-out balcony uses some of the ship’s limited width for outdoor space. A French balcony opens the cabin to the river while keeping more square footage inside. Many ms Joy accommodations use French balconies rather than sacrificing interior space. Neither design is universally better — it depends on how you travel.

ms Joy also has an unusual option: eight loft cabins that extend upward from the lower deck for additional height and natural light, with windows in the loft area that open. I like seeing river cruise companies think creatively about lower-deck accommodations.

Dining on Tauck ms Joy

The Compass Rose

The main dining room, with open seating, flexible dining times and panoramic windows overlooking the river.

Arthur’s

A more casual alternative, including lighter breakfast choices and casual options for lunch and dinner.

I like seeing more than one dining environment on a river ship. River cruises are intimate experiences, and a second place to dine provides welcome variety during a longer sailing.

Value

What Is Included on a Tauck River Cruise?

Tauck’s river cruise product is highly inclusive. Depending on the itinerary, inclusions extend beyond the ship itself to excursions and distinctive experiences ashore.

Onboard ms Joy, complimentary beverages include regional wine, beer, premium spirits, specialty coffee, water and soft drinks. Wi-Fi is complimentary, although — as with virtually any river cruise — performance depends on location.

There is another inclusion travelers sometimes overlook: gratuities. Tauck includes gratuities for Tauck Directors, the Cruise Director, ship staff, local guides and luggage handling. I encourage clients not to compare river cruises on the advertised cabin price alone. Compare what you will actually spend.

Onboard

Life Onboard ms Joy

ms Joy is not trying to recreate a large ocean cruise ship. That is not the point of river cruising. The ship includes:

  • Panorama Lounge and Bar
  • Sun Deck
  • Plunge pool
  • Putting green
  • Fitness center
  • Massage services
  • Bicycles for use ashore
  • Enrichment programming
  • Piano music
  • Culinary demonstrations
  • Local entertainment

For me, the most important feature of a river cruise ship is still its relationship with the destination. You are there to experience Europe. The ship should enhance that rather than compete with it.

The Right Fit

Who I Think Tauck ms Joy Is Best For

Travelers who want understated luxury
The atmosphere felt rich and sophisticated rather than flashy. This is elegance that does not ask for your attention.
Guests who value personal space
Tauck deliberately carries fewer guests than many similarly sized European river ships, which you feel in the lounges, dining rooms and sun deck.
Travelers who want larger accommodations
The 300-square-foot Tauck Suites are very attractive to travelers accustomed to larger hotel rooms or ocean cruise suites.
Anyone who wants a highly inclusive fare
Travelers who do not enjoy constantly calculating additional expenses will appreciate Tauck's approach to excursions, beverages and gratuities.
Destination-focused and guided travelers
Tauck places significant emphasis on experiences ashore and on having experienced professionals managing the details.

Honest Counsel

Who Might Prefer Another River Cruise Line?

Travelers wanting a contemporary aesthetic
Someone looking for a very modern, cutting-edge interior design may prefer another river cruise product.
Travelers shopping on lowest fare alone
Because so much of the experience is bundled into the price, Tauck is difficult to compare purely on the advertised cabin rate.
Independent planners
Travelers who prefer to arrange nearly every aspect of a trip themselves may not place the same value on Tauck's guided and inclusive approach.

A beautiful ship can still be the wrong ship for a particular traveler. That is why I compare rather than simply recommend.

Comparison

ms Joy vs. Other Luxury River Cruise Ships

I have inspected river cruise ships across multiple cruise lines, including Tauck, AmaWaterways, Riverside, Avalon, Viking and Scenic. When comparing ms Joy with another ship, I look beyond which one photographs better. I compare:

  • Cabin size and configuration
  • Public spaces
  • Dining
  • Service model
  • Inclusions
  • Excursions
  • Ship atmosphere
  • Passenger count
  • Itinerary
  • Overall value
  • Most importantly, the traveler

The Verdict

My Advisor Verdict on Tauck ms Joy

After personally inspecting Tauck ms Joy, the word I keep returning to is refined. The interiors felt deep, rich and sophisticated, with a sense of understated luxury that distinguished her from other river cruise products I have inspected.

What makes ms Joy particularly interesting is not simply how she looks. It is the combination of fewer guests, substantial interior space, large suites, an inclusive approach and Tauck’s emphasis on experiences ashore.

Would I recommend her to everyone? No. And that is exactly why I personally inspect ships. The right river cruise is not the one with the prettiest brochure. It is the one that fits the traveler.
