River cruises are not one-size-fits-all when it comes to inclusions. This guide breaks down what is typically included across major lines, what costs extra, and the three questions every first-timer should ask before booking.
The Promise vs. The Reality of River Cruise Inclusions
Every river cruise brochure makes the experience sound effortless. And it can be. But "effortless" does not always mean "all-inclusive." Whether you are considering Viking, AmaWaterways, Scenic, Avalon, Uniworld, Tauck, or American Cruise Lines, the baseline of what is covered in your fare is different from one line to the next.
This guide answers the most common questions first-time river cruisers ask after they get their quote, because knowing the answers before you book is what separates a stress-free vacation from an $800 surprise at checkout.

What Is Always Included
Across virtually every river cruise line, the following are standard:
- Your cabin accommodation for the duration of the voyage.
- All meals in the main restaurant, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
- At least one guided shore excursion per port of call.
- Port charges and taxes.
- On-board entertainment, including destination lectures, music, and cultural programming.
These are the non-negotiables. Everything beyond this list is where the lines start to differ.
Gratuities: The Most Common Surprise
If you book with Viking, AmaWaterways, or Avalon, gratuities are not included in your base fare. Viking recommends approximately $20 per person per night. AmaWaterways runs $15 to $22. For a couple on a 14-night sailing, that can add $560 to $1,232 to your total cost.
Scenic, Uniworld, and Tauck build gratuities into their fares. When you see a higher sticker price on those lines, part of what you are paying for is not having to think about this at the end of your trip.
Recommendation: Always ask your advisor to give you the total per-person cost including gratuities, not just the cabin fare.
Drinks: Three Very Different Policies
Viking includes beer, wine, and soft drinks at lunch and dinner. Outside of meals, beverages are an additional cost unless you purchase an upgrade package. AmaWaterways includes beverages during its Sip and Sail hours, typically late afternoon through the evening. Scenic, Uniworld, and Tauck include premium spirits, wine, and beer at any hour, any day.
If you enjoy having a glass of wine on the sun deck before dinner, that detail alone could shift which line is the right financial fit for your trip.
Excursions: Choice vs. Volume
Nearly every line includes at least one excursion per port. Viking and AmaWaterways stand out by offering a choice of included options per port, usually divided into gentle, active, and discovery formats, so you are not locked into a single pace or style.
Tauck is known for including a richer selection of curated experiences in the fare, often with private access to sites not available to standard tour groups. Specialty excursions on any line, such as a cooking class in Provence or a private château visit, typically carry a per-person surcharge.
The Extras That Catch First-Timers Off Guard
Airport transfers: Confirm whether roundtrip airport-to-ship transfers are included or sold separately. If they are not included, arrange transportation before you leave home.
Pre and post cruise hotels: If you are flying internationally, arriving a day early protects you from missing embarkation due to flight delays. That hotel night is usually your cost unless you book a package add-on.
Wi-Fi: Basic internet is included on most ships. It is generally sufficient for messaging and email. Streaming and video calling may be unreliable. If connectivity matters to you, ask specifically about bandwidth and data limits.
Laundry: Not included as standard on most lines. Plan accordingly on longer itineraries.
Three Questions to Ask Before You Book
- What is the total per-person cost after gratuities, a standard beverage package, and one specialty excursion per port?
- Are roundtrip airport transfers included, or are they an add-on?
- What is the per-night gratuity rate, and can I pre-pay before I sail?
These three questions give you a real budget number, not a marketing number. The answer to question one especially may change which line looks like the better value.
