AmaWaterways · Ship Review
A ship review from an AmaWaterways Certified Specialist — twin balconies, included excursions, and the itinerary flexibility the wider ships cannot match.
Section One
AmaSerena is what most travelers picture when they imagine a European river cruise ship, executed carefully. She is a classic-width AmaWaterways vessel carrying roughly 156 guests, which means she fits the traditional locks and can string the Rhine, Main, and Danube together in a single itinerary — something the wider AmaMagna simply cannot do.
What sets her apart from the general run of river ships is the twin balcony stateroom: a full step-out balcony and a French balcony in the same room. It sounds like a small thing on paper. In practice it changes how you use the cabin, because the room stays open to the river even when the weather does not cooperate.
What I Noticed
The Right Fit
Honest Counsel
Onboard
The majority of AmaSerena’s staterooms use the twin balcony layout, with suites available at the top of the range and fixed-window cabins on the lowest deck at the entry price. My usual guidance: if the budget allows, take a twin balcony on a middle deck. It is the sweet spot for light, view, and quiet.
Onboard
The main restaurant serves open-seating breakfast, lunch, and dinner with regionally driven menus that follow the itinerary. The Chef’s Table specialty restaurant is included in the fare, with a multi-course tasting menu prepared in an open kitchen — you simply reserve a night.
Wine, beer, and soft drinks accompany lunch and dinner, and the daily sip-and-sail hour is included. AmaWaterways is a member of La Chaîne des Rôtisseurs, and the kitchen takes that seriously.
Ashore
AmaWaterways includes at least one excursion in nearly every port, offered in three tiers so guests travelling together can still choose their own pace.
Guided walking and coach tours at a comfortable pace with excellent local guides.
Shorter distances and slower pacing that cover the same highlights with less walking.
Hikes and guided bike rides for guests who would rather earn their dinner than ride a coach to it.
