AmaLucia on the Rhine: The Family-Friendly AmaWaterways Ship, Reviewed

The AmaLucia debuted on the Rhine in 2022 as one of the newest ships in the AmaWaterways fleet, built to the same 135-meter, roughly 156-guest design as the AmaSiena, AmaLea, and AmaKristina. If you have seen photographs of any of those ships, you already know the AmaLucia's bones: twin-balcony staterooms, a heated sun-deck pool with a swim-up bar, the Chef's Table aft, and a bright, contemporary main lounge.

What sets her apart in my planning is how AmaWaterways positions her. The AmaLucia is one of the ships the line uses for its family sailings, including Adventures by Disney departures, which means she was fitted out with connecting staterooms and family-friendly configurations that many older river ships simply do not have.

Her home is the Rhine, which puts her on the Amsterdam-to-Basel corridor that anchors both the classic Captivating Rhine itinerary and the line's most requested Christmas market departures.

Staterooms on the AmaLucia follow the AmaWaterways design I know well from her sister ships. Category-A through -BB staterooms on the upper decks carry the twin balcony: a floor-to-ceiling French balcony and a separate outside sitting balcony, so you can open the room to the river or step out and sit with a coffee as the castles pass.

Piano Deck (lowest) staterooms have fixed windows and are the value play; they are compact but well finished and perfectly comfortable for guests who spend their days ashore or in the lounge.

Suites at the top of the range add space and a larger balcony, and the AmaLucia's connecting staterooms are the ones I book most often for families who want doors between rooms rather than cabins down the hall from each other. Ask me about which specific numbers connect before you commit.

Shore excursions are included and offered in CLASSIC, GENTLE, and ACTIVE tiers, plus Limited Edition small-group options on many days. On the Rhine that means a gentle walking tour of Cologne alongside a bike ride through the vineyards outside Rüdesheim on the same morning, with everyone back on board for lunch.

The Rhine's compact geography is a gift for families: most ports are a short walk from the dock, and the ship often stays in port into the evening.

AmaWaterways service on every ship I have sailed has been warm, personal, and consistent, and clients returning from the AmaLucia describe the same thing: a crew that learns names by day two and a cruise manager who genuinely runs the ship's rhythm.

On family departures, the additional programming staff make a real difference to how relaxed the adults on board are able to be.

River ships, including new ones, have real accessibility limits. The AmaLucia has an elevator that serves the main passenger decks but not the sun deck, stateroom doorways and bathrooms are not designed for wheelchairs, and gangways can be steep depending on water level and where the ship is docked.
