AmaStella on the Danube: The AmaViola's Sister Ship, Reviewed

The AmaStella and the AmaViola entered service together in 2016 as twin ships on the Danube, and they share everything that matters: a 135-meter hull carrying around 158 guests, the twin-balcony stateroom design, connecting staterooms for families, a heated sun-deck pool with swim-up bar, and the Chef's Table aft.

Having spent a week on the AmaViola, my expectations for the AmaStella are specific. Expect an intimate, standard-width ship that passes the Danube locks, builds community quickly among guests, and has a bolder, brighter design personality than the more understated Rhine ships of the same era.

The AmaStella spends her seasons on the Danube corridor between Budapest and Vilshofen or Nuremberg, which puts her on the Melodies of the Danube and Romantic Danube itineraries, plus the Danube's Christmas market circuit through Vienna, Passau, and Regensburg.

On the AmaViola I stayed in a twin-balcony stateroom and can describe the AmaStella's with confidence, because they are the same: a French balcony that opens the room to the river, plus a separate outside balcony with two chairs. On the Wachau Valley stretch, and in the locks, having both is a genuine pleasure rather than a brochure line.

Storage is well thought out, the bathroom is compact but the shower is larger than most river ships offer, and the connecting staterooms are the ones I book for families who want a door between rooms.

Piano Deck staterooms have fixed windows at the entry price. Suites at the top of the plan add space and a bigger balcony; there are few, so book early.

Included excursions in CLASSIC, GENTLE, and ACTIVE tiers, plus Limited Edition small-group options. On the Danube that means a Budapest city tour alongside a Buda Hills hike, a Vienna Ringstrasse tour alongside a bike ride to Klosterneuburg, and the full-day Salzburg excursion from Linz.

The ship's complimentary bicycles and the Danube's flat, well-paved riverside paths are a very good match.

Service on the AmaViola was the reason I still exchange messages with crew members, and AmaWaterways staffs its Danube twins from the same pool. Expect names learned quickly, a cruise manager who genuinely runs the week, and a crew that takes visible pride in the ship.

The AmaStella's elevator serves the main passenger decks but not the sun deck. Staterooms and bathrooms are not designed for wheelchairs, and gangways on the Danube can be steep depending on water level and dock position.

AmaWaterways requires guests to board and disembark without assistance. Budapest's hills and Salzburg's cobbles add challenges ashore. If mobility is a concern for anyone in your party, talk with me before booking so we can choose honestly.
